Created by Napoleon and inaugurated in 1852 to welcome its eminent members including Louis Pasteur, Gustave Eiffel, Léon Gaumont or Marie Curie, the Hôtel de l'Industrie is one of the in the 19th century. It opened its doors to the most great researchers, thinkers and inventors to honor the fine flower of French technical and economic progress. The cinema's cradle, it hosts the first historical demonstration of sound with phonautograph in 1860 by Édouard-Léon Scott from Martinville. Then, a few years later in 1895, the Lumière brothers organized their very first screening in the presence of Léon Gaumont - founding act of the film industry - within the Salon Lumière which carries today their name.
